Charitable donations: plans to extend eligibility for tax assistance
Quebec will follow Ottawa’s lead and extend the deadline to declare charitable donations until the end of February.
The office of the province’s finance minister announced Tuesday that the government plans to change tax rules so that donations made until Feb. 28, 2025 are eligible for tax credits during the 2024 tax year.
The announcement follows a similar announcement made by the federal Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc the day before. The federal government plans to introduce a bill when Parliament resumes sitting to change the tax law and put the extension into effect. The goal is to give donors sufficient time to ensure their donations are received and processed, despite the Canada Post strike that interrupted mail delivery for around a month.
“Charities play an essential role in Quebec, lending a helping hand to citizens in need. Our goal today is to mitigate the impact that Canada Post’s service interruption had on their fundraising campaigns,” Quebec Finance Minister Eric Girard said in a statement.
Donors who report their contribution can receive both federal and provincial tax credits.
